Suffer, little children

I'm very glad to be saying farewell to the Child Protection Team, Woodford Green Police Station. Today I was looking for a new bottle of long-life milk in the break room storecupboard and found something labelled BLOOD SALIVA TEST KIT.

The nature of the work is quite disturbing, too. When I was here before I wasn't really affected by it, but I spent this week constantly hearing and reading about appalling, dreadful things being done to children - in many cases by their own parents or carers.

I don't understand it. How could you give birth to and raise a child, with all the effort and resources that involves, just to abuse it? Yet people do. I spent this morning searching the PROtect database for all the children currently on the At Risk register to fill in the stated reason. 'Sexual abuse'. 'Physical abuse'. 'Emotional abuse'. 'Neglect'. It just went on and on. Because I've signed the Official Secrets Act I can't write about actual incidents, and I wouldn't if I could.

It's not all bad, though. How often do you get your timesheet signed by a Detective Inspector?
