Spitting fire

Further to several_bees's excellent points re Spitfire Books, I would like to add:
  • William Brown was not immune to the charms of the fairer sex; he frequently made a fool of himself for pretty girls in frilly dresses, had a crush on his teacher, and offered to marry (on separate occasions) his cousin and Joan-next-door.
  • W. E. Johns, author of the Biggles books, also created a WAAF officer named Worrals who not only bested the menfolk at every opportunity but lectured them on chauvinism.
  • James Bond takes a positively feminine approach to personal grooming, socks and all.
  • Bulldog Drummond is gay.
I made the last one up. Because I'm a woman and women don't understand the concept of fair play.

For the record, I am all for stoicism (and indeed Epicureanism) and chivalry; I just feel that one could learn them just as well from Winnie-the-Pooh. After all, Eeyore whinges all the bloody time and look at all the bad stuff that happens to him.

(of course if they're going to reissue all the Biggles books with nice new covers I'll be first in the queue.)
