This is a bit puzzling. My best guess is that it was a semi-aquatic fly larva, most likely that of a hover fly in the genus _Eristalis_. You should be able to find pictures of these larvae by doing a web search on the scientific name.So I did. Apparently said larvae are known as 'rat-tailed maggots', which describes our visitor exactly.
