"Well done. Good ride. Successful."

And with those five words, two years of practice and Observed Rides came to an end as I passed the IAM Advanced Riding Test. Many motorcyclists pass more quickly, but surely few can be as pleased about it.

Over thirty miles and 90 minutes of motorway, dual carriageway, urban, country A roads and lanes, I demonstrated to the satisfaction of my examiner an above average standard of riding which was safe, systematic, smooth and progressive.

Learning doesn't end here, of course - it's always possible to be safer, smoother and more progressive, and every mile adds a little to the stock of experience. But I'm over the moon to be an officially advanced rider.
