Fish Cheer

While searching the web for something else entirely, I discovered that Country Joe McDonald is playing a gig not two streets away from my workplace on June 5th. One lunchbreak later, the ticket is in my possession.

I discovered Country Joe and The Fish thanks to the Woodstock film. Their bag was psychedelia and protest music, most famously I-Feel-Like-I'm-Fixin'-To-Die Rag ('and it's one, two, three, what are we fighting for? Don't ask me, I don't give a damn, next stop is Vietnam') and very much my sort of thing.

While many of his contemporaries burned out, sold out or dropped out, Joe is alive and well in Berkeley collecting nurse dolls, commemorating Woody Guthrie and saving the oak tree. I know this because he has a charming website at where you can read all about it.

You can also listen to Country Joe In Space, a compilation of science fiction-themed songs 'available only in cyberspace'. Yes, Country Joe is a filker. What a guy!

Anyone care to join me at the Borderline?
