Die Laughing

The Barbican is currently running a season called This Made Me Laugh, in which figures from the world of comedy have chosen a film that makes them collapse into giggles. Had I the time and the money I would go to every single one, because apart from Bullets over Broadway, which I haven't seen, everything in the lineup is a favourite.

The Naked Gun, though, is probably my favourite film of all time, and it was this that yagfox and I arranged to see on Saturday.

The film was the choice of John Lloyd, who has his finger in many comic pies and directed the Police Squad!-based ads for Red Rock Cider. Lloyd gave a short speech before the showing and told some lovely stories about working with Nielsen on the ads.

Although I dread to think how many times I watched the copy of Naked Gun my family recorded off the TV, seeing it in the cinema was a first for me (I wouldn't have been allowed to watch it first time round, since the 12A certificate had yet to be introduced). It was interesting to see what different sections of the audience laughed at, and how things went significantly quieter during the baseball scenes as none of us knew any more about baseball than Frank Drebin does, and many of us significantly less.

'Probably my favourite film of all time' isn't hyperbole, by the way. It makes me cry with laughter, and it makes me happy, without fail, whatever else is going on in my life, and this is the most precious of all gifts.

My top moments:

  • "Everywhere I look, something reminds me of her."

  • "I've finally found someone I can love. Good, clean love, without utensils."

  • "Jane, since I've met you, I've noticed things that I never knew were there before. Birds singing. Dew glistening on a newly-formed leaf. Stoplights."
