Comfort Food

Tunnock's Tea Cakes, for those outside the UK, are vaguely boob-shaped little confections of biscuit, layer of sticky red jam, marshmallow fluff, all coated in a thin layer of low-quality chocolate and wrapped in silver and red foil. They're a staple of lunchbox, school tuck shop and family tea.

They are not trendy.

So I was surprised the other night to see posters advertising them all along the Underground, obviously aimed at the busy young professional.

The slogan was '91 calories, tastes like 900'. Fair enough. Unfortunately, it's easy to misread as '91 calories, tastes like goo' - especially if you're a bit drunk, as I was.

I have not been blown up. Hope you haven't either.

London Can Take It

At two o'clock we were summoned to a staff meeting and told that while the government had requested everyone to stay put, it was appreciated that some of us might want to try to make our way home, and we were welcome to. Furthermore, the office would be closed tomorrow.

The atmosphere, I'm ashamed to report, was that of a schoolroom whose occupants have just been told it's a snow day.

I travelled home along a reasonably uncluttered A2, even more pleased than usual that I ride to work, and am now enjoying a vodka and tonic, because I'm out of gin and it's not every day things blow up in your vicinity.

Today, online and off, I've seen touching concern and incredibly generous offers of help. Here's a song of which I'm very fond, and more so since moving to London; I feel it's as relevant today as it was during the Blitz:

Underneath the Bunker

Ooh, now I'm pissed off.

I have tickets to see R.E.M. in Hyde Park on Saturday.

It's been put off till the 16th.

When I'll be at the Royal International Air Tattoo in Fairford.

Anyone want my ticket?

ETA: Just had a voicemail message from Ticketmaster confirming that due to the 'recent tragic circumstances today' the concert has been rescheduled for the 16th, and if one cannot make it one may return tickets for a refund. Blah.
