I chirpily asked the colleague who wanted me to look after her cat if 'we were still on for kitty-sitting'. She burst into tears and told me the cat had had to be put to sleep last week, and she hadn't mentioned it to me because she couldn't face talking about it. I feel absolutely terrible, and I hope my heartfelt condolences were some comfort. I'm sorry I won't get to meet this obviously very precious pet.
