The Moral Maze

You're in a boat. With you on the boat are a dog and a man.

The dog is your dog. You've had him since he was a puppy. He is a loyal, intelligent and loving companion. He has saved your life by barking to warn you of a fire in your home while you were asleep. He is like family to you. He is a dog.

The man is a complete bastard. He is a liar/adulterer/rapist/murderer/sexist/moron/paedophile/embezzler/combination thereof, whichever you find most repellant. He is probably waiting for an opportunity to do you in right now. You don't like him. He is a human.

The boat sinks. Neither of your companions can swim; you are strong enough to get one of them to safety, but not both.

Your moral dilemma for the day is:

Which do you save?

The dog
39(92.9%)
The man
2(4.8%)
Whichever is nearest (the cop-out clause)
1(2.4%)

Was this a difficult decision?

Yes
4(9.5%)
No
38(90.5%)

Instead of a dog, your non-human companion is the last remaining representative of a rare animal species, and pregnant. Which do you save?

The pregnant rare animal
33(78.6%)
The man
5(11.9%)
Whichever is nearest (the cop-out clause)
4(9.5%)

Was this a difficult decision?

Yes
11(26.2%)
No
31(73.8%)
