London Can Take It
At two o'clock we were summoned to a staff meeting and told that while the government had requested everyone to stay put, it was appreciated that some of us might want to try to make our way home, and we were welcome to. Furthermore, the office would be closed tomorrow.
The atmosphere, I'm ashamed to report, was that of a schoolroom whose occupants have just been told it's a snow day.
I travelled home along a reasonably uncluttered A2, even more pleased than usual that I ride to work, and am now enjoying a vodka and tonic, because I'm out of gin and it's not every day things blow up in your vicinity.
Today, online and off, I've seen touching concern and incredibly generous offers of help. Here's a song of which I'm very fond, and more so since moving to London; I feel it's as relevant today as it was during the Blitz:
